Hello, fellow language lover!
We are all shaped by language. How could we not be? It is inescapable in our world — from the people we meet, to the things we hear and read, to what goes on in the inner workings of our minds. In fact, it’s one of the very things that makes us human (talking animals aside).
What’s more, language is not just a system of grammar. It’s a marker of identity, a symbol of power, and an active political tool. Language is continually evolving and shifting, shaping our world and society along the way.
If you, like me, are the type of person whose curiosity is sparked by the richness of our linguistic world, this newsletter is certainly for you!
About Me
Hello! My name is Rebecca. I’m a writer, educator, and linguist living in New York City. I received my MA in Applied Linguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University. My love for language and the people who speak them led me to create Everybody Talks. (I also have a second newletter, ZAN!, which was born from my desire to uplift fellow Asian creatives.)
Aside from writing, I love getting lost in New York’s incredible museums, being the most enthusiastic person at karaoke, and baking things with slightly less sugar than the recipe calls for.
Let’s Connect!

Hi, I’m Ronald. Nice to meet you. I just discovered your Substack, and it looks interesting. I enjoy learning languages and I’m currently studying Italian.
Hi Rebecca, nice to meet you! As a professional translator, interpreter, and technical writer, languages have been both my passion and my main tool at work.
On Substack, I am trying to help language-oriented professionals build a career in the software industry, just like I did.
